Grublet is a little boy grub. He lives with his Grub family in the beautiful land called Flower Town. He has just moved to Vegetable Row where there are lots of lovely places to discover and there’s a lot of tasty food to eat.
Grublet loves to explore, and the first thing he discovers is a spider’s web, where he meets his very first friend, Sophie Spider. Grublet moves slowly, so he never misses anything going on around him. This leads to many exciting adventures with his new friends, around and about Flower Town.
Grubkin is a little girl Grub. Grublet is her twin brother. She goes out and about with all her friends, moving slowly and noticing everything that is going on. She is adventurous like her brother, and loves exploring new places and meeting other creatures and animals. She is a little bit calmer than her brother, and likes to spend time wandering around the pretty flowers in Flower Town and chatting with them. The flowers see everything that’s going on in the Town, so Grubkin finds out lots of interesting things from them.
The Grub
Grubs have long soft bodies and look similar to caterpillars.
When uncovered, grubs are usually lying on their sides in a C shape.
They have six very tiny undeveloped legs, all placed underneath the head area. They have hard heads, mouth parts for chewing, and air holes along the sides of their body.
Grubs are a little bit cheeky as they can destroy garden lawns! They live in the soil underneath the lawn, nibbling away at the grass roots. Gardeners don’t know that grubs are around until they see yellow patches all over the lawn.
Grubs like warm weather, and when it becomes colder, they move deeper down into the soil for protection.
A grub is not really an insect. It is a larva which eventually transforms into a beetle.
Grubs are useful because they work hard amongst garden rubbish, like grass cuttings and rotting leaves. They make tunnels in there to aerate the rubbish, and they move around a lot, churning it up. This helps to turn the rubbish into good food that the gardener can mix with the soil to feed all the new plants.
