He is the wisest insect in Flower Town. The Grubs and their Friends always turn to him for help when things go wrong, because he seems to have the answer to any problem. He is dependable, reliable and always around. The Friends know where to find him because he likes to relax during the day, quietly, by himself. His favourite places are in the grooves of old damp wood or underneath muddy flower pots and grubby stones. He gets his exercise at night, pottering around old leaves on the ground or anything that is rotting or decaying in the garden.
The woodlouse
The woodlouse has seven pairs of legs (fourteen legs!) and really long antennae. It also has fourteen parts to its body, so it can easily curl into a ball to protect itself, so that only the hard outer shell is exposed to any threat to the woodlouse.
During the night the woodlouse is active, but during the day it hides in dark, damp places, such as dead plants, damp wood, flower pots and old bricks. It feeds on rotting leaves and plants, but sometimes likes new seedlings.
Woodlice are very useful because they help to recycle the goodness from old plants, so that all the new plants can get plenty of food for growing.
