Bobby Butterfly loves flitting around the flowers. He’s a very happy insect and the flowers like having him around. He is almost like a flower himself with his bright colours and patterns on his wings. He makes his friends happy just by being with them. He is gentle and kind, and always ready to whisper news or messages as he alights softly on a flower or tree. He has many butterfly friends with wings of different colours and patterns. In the spring and summer when they all flit around together, Flower Town is full of colour.

The butterfly

Butterflies usually arrive in the warm spring season and flutter gently through gardens and the countryside, landing on flowers and fruit to eat their nectar and juices. They are able to taste with their feet.

A butterfly has four brightly-coloured wings and there are thousands of butterflies in the world, with different patterns on their wings.

Butterflies are insects. A butterfly’s life is made up of four parts. It starts as an egg stuck to a leaf, then the egg hatches into a caterpillar, which eats the leaf it was born on. It then finds a safe place to attach itself using a silky thread that it spins. It sheds its skin and its new smooth outer skin hardens to form a pupa or chrysalis. After a few weeks, the chrysalis opens and a beautiful butterfly is born. At first its wings are crinkled and wet, but after an hour they become dry and strong enough for the butterfly to flutter away.
